«The Impact of Solar Flares on Power Infrastructure  »

(L’Impact des Eruptions Solaires sur les Infrastructures d’Alimentation Electrique)

Solar storm activity can overload electrical grid systems which can result in lost power supply and significant damage to high voltage transformers. In 2003 a series of solar flares caused huge eruptions on the surface of the sun. Within minutes after the first flare, Earth was hit with radiation, aircraft had to be re-routed and satellite communications were disrupted. Significantly, 12 transformers in South Africa suffered such damage that they were removed from service, Sweden suffered a blackout affecting 50,000 households as well as numerous businesses and transformers in North America suffered tripped capacitors or overheating.

The session will review the science and underwriting implications of solar flares for first party insurers and policyholders.
